3. All the World's a Stage
- William Shakespeare
Understanding the text
Answer the following questions.
a. Why does the poet compare the world with a stage?
The poet compares the world with a stage because the entire human kind play their respective roles which is given and determined by the God. As an actor appears on the stage, we all have entrance on this earth. Exactly like an actor each human being plays a certain role on this planet and finally faces death. The poet calls it exit from the stage. Similarly, he calls our birth as the entrance on the stage.
b. What's the first stage in a human's life? In what sense can it be a troubling stage?
The first stage in a human's life is the infant, mewling and puking in the nurse's arms. It can be a troubling stage in the sense that an infant is totally helpless creature who depends on others for his / her every work. Apart from that, an infancy stage is a vulnerable stage where newly born baby needs to get enough care and attention. In the absence of the proper care an infant gets sick. Therefore this first stage of the human life is very sensitive and at the same time it can be a troubling stage too.
c. Describe the second stage of life based on the poem.
The second stage of the human life is a whining school boy, who is carrying a school bag and walking slowly just like a snail to his school. This second stage is very important to shape the personality of a human being. In fact, no child wants to go to school but the parents have to send them for the betterment of their lives. Education is the most important thing to all of us. Obviously, a child enjoys more at home and feels better with his / her mother and family. When a child starts to go to school, he feels very burdened and therefore has to creep to go to the school unwillingly.
d. Why is the last stage called second childhood?
The last stage is called second childhood because at this stage the mind and senses of the human leaves to work. A person in his / her old age, becomes like a child who repeats same thing frequently and memory doesn't work. The old man needs same kind of care and attention as a child should have. Therefore, the last stage is called second childhood.
e. In what sense are we the players in the world's stage?
We are the players in the world's stage in the sense that we all perform our role (duties and responsibilities) during our life. After the certain period we have to accept the death. This earth is a stage and we all are players on this planet.
