Meaning of Prepositional Verbs


  • apologize to - v. to say sorry to someone because you think that you have done something wrong to him/her.
  • E.g - I apologized to my cousin brother because I was unable to attend his wedding ceremony.

  • admire for - v. to appreciate/praise somebody/something
  • E.g. - The soldiers were highly admired for their bravery in the war.

  • aim at - v. focus on
  • E.g. - The students should always aim at their studies and improvement on their performance.

  • agree on - v. to consent with somebody / something
  • E.g. - The scientist from around the world agreed on environmental issue which exists globally. (as a major problem)

  • grow up - v. to rise / to get older / to spend time
  • E.g. - Mos of the Nepalese students grow up in rural environment and therefore, they are more social than the people of urban areas.

  • separate from - v. to exclude oneself from something / someone
  • E.g. - We must try to separate ourselves from the influence of bad people and bad addictives like drug and alcoholism

  • acquaint with - v. to be familiar with somebody
  • E.g. - I was acquainted with my sister's friend during her birthday party.

  • believe in - v. to have faith / trust in something
  • E.g. - Hindus believe in God, whereas Christians believe in Jesus Christ

  • adopt to - v. change a large organization can be show to adopt or to change
  • E.g. - if you adopt to a new situation or adopt yourself to it, you change your ideas or behaviour in order to deal with it successfully.

  • apply for - v. o send our applcation for a particular position
  • E.g. - I applied for the position of "Consultant" in a reputed company.

  • arrive at - v. to come / reach somewhere
  • E.g. - They arrived on exactly at 7 pm.

  • comment on - v. if you comment on something, ou give your opinion about it or you give an explanation for it.
  • E.g. - People continued to comment on difficult political parties during the recent election in Nepal.

  • escape from - v. try to be away from something
  • E.g. - Irresponsible people always try to escape from their duties and responsibilities.

  • worry about - v. to feel anxious about someone / something
  • E.g. - Every parent gets worried for their children.

  • agree with - v. to concent with someone / somebody
  • E.g. - I can not agree with implementation of MCC in my motherland.

  • involve in - v. to be participant in something
  • E.g. - You have involved me in a great deal of extra work.

  • devote to - v. to give all of something, especially your time, effort to something you believe in
  • E.g. - He decided to devote the rest of his life to the field of yoga.

  • pray for - v. to speak to god either privately or in a religious ceremony / to wish for something
  • E.g. - Christians hope and pray for salvation.

  • glance at - v. immediately upon looking / to look quickly or briefly
  • E.g. - She had a quick glance at the newspaper while having her breakfast.

  • concentrate on - v. to direct your attention / efforts towards a particular activity
  • E.g. - It was up to him to concentrate on his studies and make something of himself.

  • recover from - v. to become completely well again after an illness or injury
  • E.g. - He is recovering from a hamstring injury.

  • argue about - v. to disagree strongly and sometimes angrily in talking or discussing something
  • E.g. - They started arguing about politics.

  • charge with - v. impose a duty or task on / to ask an amount of money for something
  • E.g. - She has been charged with drug smuggling.

  • succeed in - v. achieve the desired aim or result / gain victory
  • E.g. - He succeeded in piloting the ship into an unfamiliar fjord and signalled for assistance.

  • referred to - v. mention or allude to direct someone or something to a different place or person for informationm, help or action
  • E.g. - I promised not to refer to the matter again.

  • scold for - v. to critise angrily someone who has done something wrong
  • E.g. - He scolded the kids for not cleaning up the mess they had made in the kitchen

  • look at - v. move eyes to see someone or something / study mentally / view
  • E.g. - He turned and looked at her with hope.

  • rely on - v. to need someone or something for support or help / to depend on someone or something
  • E.g. - My mother relied on me for financial support

  • resign from - v. to give up a job or position by telling your employer that you are leaving
  • E.g. - He resign from his frustating company to build his own empire.

  • boast about - v. to praise oneself extravagently in speech / speak of oneself with excessive pride
  • E.g. - He was a naturally shy man, who never boasted about his achievements.

  • trust with - v. to allow someone to have or use something valuable / to rely on the truthfulness or belive
  • E.g. - They trusted their son with the family car.

  • specialize in - v. to study or work on a particular subject or skill more than any other, so that you become an expert in it
  • E.g. - The restaurant specializes in fresh local Nepalese Cuisine.

  • reply to - v. say something in response to something / a verbal or written answer
  • E.g. - He didn't reply to her greeting.

  • vote for - v. a formal indication of a choice between two or more candidates / to express your choice or opinion especially by official writing a mark on a paper
  • E.g. - She had voted for her favourite politician.

  • bring up - v. look after a child until it is an adult / raise a matter for discussion or consideration
  • E.g. - She brought up five children.

  • count on - v. rely on someone or something / depend on
  • E.g. - I'm counting on you to help me.

  • suffer from - v. to be ill with especially recurrently / to endure death, pain or distress
  • E.g. - She is suffering from Hepatitis B.

  • dream about - v. to think about something that you are eager about
  • E.g. - I dream of one day working for myself and not having a boss.

  • confuse with - v. to mix someone up with someone else / to mistake someone or something with something else / to be uncertain or perplex
  • E.g. - You must be confusing me with someone else.

  • absorb in - v. take in or soak up (energy or a liquid or other substance) / take up the attention of / interest grately
  • E.g. - He has retained the values that he absorbed as a young man.
