  1. To which two things does the speaker compare his love in the first stanza?
  2. - The speaker compares his love with a red rose and the melody in the beginning stanza the poem is a romantic poem where speaker has tried to describe his feelings for his beloved and tried to immoratalize his beautiful feelings for her.

  3. What does the speaker promise in the 2nd and 3rd stanzas?
  4. - In the second stanza, the speaker promises the never ending love since he says that he will love his beloved till the sea dries and till humanity exists. Similarly, in the 3rd stanza the poet has mentioned that his feelings for his beloved will be constant and stable even if the rocks will melt with the sun and there will be only sands on this planet. He indicates the end of all the living creatures on Earth and tries to show his unconditional love for her.


  5. What imagery does he use in his promise, and why do you think he uses such language?
  6. - The poet or the speaker has used many images in the poem. For instance, he uses "O, my love is like a red, red rose,","Till a' the seas gang dry","And the rocks melt wi' the sun", "While the sands o' life shall run".
    I think he uses such language to show the quality of permanency for his love the poet loves her until the end of human life and therefore he has sketched a very vivid and realistic picture of his profound love for his beloved.


  7. In the last stanza, what event is about to happen by mentioning the number of miles?
  8. - In the last stanza, the speaker mentiones about the farewell between his beloved and himself, which is going to be for a while. He promises to his beloved that he will come again although it will be ten thousand mile that means very long journey and certainly it will take a long time for reunion.


  9. Which image in the poem do you find the most memorable of surprising and why?
  10. Robert Burns has used many visual images in the poem but the most memorable image is, "O, my love is like a red, red rose".





Summary of the Poem


The poet in love with a woman. The beloved is very beautiful like a red rose in June. She is as sweet as the melody of the musical instrument played in fine-tune. The poet's beloved till te saeas are dried and rocks are melted by the heat of the sun. He lover her until the end of human life. Now the poet wishes for the good life and bright future of his beloved. He promises to meet her even if he has to walk ten thousand miles.


Analysis of the poem


  • The speaker artistically draws a picture of his penetrating and intense love. He paints this picture with profound emotions.
  • The speaker compares his adorable beloved with "a red rose" and "sweet melody" to intensify his deep feelings for her.
  • He addresses her declaring that is love for her will stay still until the seas drey up and the rocks melt because his beloved is so loveable.
  • His love for her will last until there are humans on this planet.
  • Due to some reasons he has to go far away from her but he promises to return to her even if has to travel thousands of miles.

Use of simile in the poem


  • Simile is a device used to compare an object or a person with something else using "like" or "as" to make the meaning clear to the readers.
  • The first is used in the first line, "O my love is like a red, red rose".
  • The second is used in the third line, "O my love is like the melody".

Use of hyperbole


  • Hyperbole is a device used to exaggerate a statement for the sake of emphasis.
  • The poet has also used hyperbole in the last line of the second stanza, "Till a' the seas gang day."
  • The next is used in the third stanza, "And the rock melt wi' the sun".

Use of Alliteration


  • Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds in the same line such as the sounds in the same line such as the sounds of /l/ and /r/ in:
  • "O, my love is like a red,red rose."
