    Understanding the Text

    Answer the following questions.

  7. a. Where did the children use to play?
  8. - The children used to play in the Giant's garden. Since the Giant had gone to visit his friend and stayed there for seven years. So the children were free to play in this lovely garden with soft green grass and beautiful flowers in a happy mood without any disturbance.

  9. What did the Snow and the Frost do to the garden?
  10. - The snow covered up the grass with her white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver. They also invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. The snow and frost symbolize the sad and gloomy environment of Giant's garden in the absence of those children who previously used to play there. When the selfish Giant prohibited them to enter into his garden, the nature became unhappy and upset with the Giant along with children. The children represent nature or God.

  11. What did the Giant hear when he was lying awake in bed?
  12. - When he was lying awake in bed, he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King's musicians passing by. Actually it was a little linnet (a kind of bird) singing outside his window. Since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the most beautiful music in the world. Hearing this melodious sound, the Giant convinced that spring had arrived to his garden finally.

  13. Why do you think spring season never came to the giant's garden?
  14. - I think spring season never came to the Giant's garden because of his selfish and rude attitude. He did not only prohibited the children to play in his garden but also built a high wall around it and put up a notice-board. The spring season brings a variety of flowers and the melodious chirping sounds of birds everywhere as children were not allowed to play in his garden, there was only snow and frost.

  15. How did the giant realize his mistake?
  16. -The Giant realized his mistake when he found that the spring season had arrived everywhere except his garden. One day he found that the children had entered into his garden through a little hole in the wall and they were sitting the branches of the tree. He was surprised to see that the trees were so glad to have the children back again that they had covered themselves with blossoms. The flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. After seeing this astonishing view, the Giant realized his mistake. He understood that the spring would never come there in the absence of children. He changed himself by allowing all those children to play and began to give them affection.
