Grade 11 Unit-1 Education and Humanity Grammar (Word Class)


Word Class


Word Class refers to the category of words of similar form or function. Another name of word class is parts of speech.

There are eight types of word class. They are


  1. Noun
  2. - The words which are name of a thing, a person, a place, an animal or an idea is defined as noun or simply any naming word is called a noun.

    For example - Amrita, London, table, hope, etc.

    - Mary goes to the park every Saturday

    - We can comfortably relax on a sofa.


  3. Pronoun
  4. - A pronoun is a word which is used to replace a nown or is used in place of a noun to avoid its repetition.

    For example - he, she, it, we, they, etc.

    - He just came back from his maternal uncle's house.

    - I want to help the homeless people.


  5. Adjective
  6. - The words which describes, modifies or gives more information about a noun or pronoun in a sentence is defined as adjectives.

    For example - strong, fast, red, black, huge, tiny, etc.

    - Ram is strong enough to lift 20kgs of mass.

    - The dog was able to run as fast as its opponent cat.


  7. Verb
  8. - The words which show or describe an action are called verbs.

    For example - write, read, play, sleep, eat, etc.

    - He has been studying for the last few hours.

    - Radhika hadcooked delicious food yesterday.


  9. Adverb
  10. -An adverb is a word which modifies a verb, adjective or another verb. It simply tells how(often), where and when.

    For example - amazingly, fastly, steadly, slowly, daily, here, etc.

    - He completed his classwork in an amazingly fast speed.

    - Diwas was working on his project yesterday.


  11. Preposition
  12. - The words which show the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word is called a preposition.

    For example - between, in front of, beside, opposite to, inside, etc.

    - Sam's hospital is situated between two skyscrapers.

    - The cat was hiding under the table.


  13. Conjunction
  14. - The words which join two words, ideas or phrases together are called conjunctions.

    For example - and, if, although, because, but, for, etc.

    - If, I accomplish my dream, I will be very happy.

    - All of us have numerous problems but we must learn to be happy.


  15. Interjection
  16. - The words or phrases used to express strong expression towards something is called interjection

    For example - alas, bravo, yippee, hurrah, wow, etc.

    - Alas! his grandfather passed away.

    - Bravo! we defeated our toughest opponent.
