- How was Gouvernail different from Mrs. Baroda expectation?
- How does Mrs. Baroda compare Gouvernail with her husband?
- Why and how did Mrs. Baroda try to change Gourvernail's solitary habits?
- How does Gaston disagree with his wife on Gouvernail's character?
- Why is Gaston surprised with his wife's expression towards the end of the story?
Mrs. Baroda was unhappy with the information about Gouvernail's visit because she and her husband Gaston were spending winter in proper way and were having enjoyment together. Being wife she really liked the company of her husband, working and talking together without any interruption. When she came to know from her husband about Gouvernail's visit, she started to imagine that her long conversation with Goston might be disturbed by Gouvernail and she would not feel free for her other activities too.
Mrs. Baroda had heard much about Gouvernail by hadn't met with him. Therefore she had created an image of Gouvernail in her mind unconsciously. She pictured him tall, slim, cynical, with eyeglasses, and his hand in pockets. But actually Gourvernail wasn't very tall, nor his hands in his pockets. Except these differences, Mrs. Baroda had expected him to be chatty but he always sat mute and recepting (willing to listen). Although he was very polite and mannered, he didn't attempt to draw attention of her.
Mrs. Baroda was impressed by the personality of Governail and was unable to find the reason why she liked him. She had gone throught the conflict because she is a married and had a happy conjugal life, why did she get attracted to Gouvernail? She started to think that did her husband Gaston lack those qualities which Gouvernail possessed but didn't find the obvious answers of her queries. She couldn't discover brilliant and promising traits in Gouvernail which her husband assured her that he possessed. Gaston has been very frank and showed his wordy hospitality where as, Gouvernail sat rather mute / quietly. This kind of differences might make her compare between her husband with Gouvernail.
Mrs. Baroda was totally puzzled to find Mr. Gourvernail's solitary habits. Even if she tried to understand him better, she failed to do so. She remained irritated and left her husband and his friend alone for most of the time. She deliberately tried to ignore Mr.Gouvernail so that he could pay attention towards her. Although her effort didn't work so well, later she found his talking style very impressive.
Mrs.Baroda has been totally irritated with the attitude of Mr. Gouvernail and doesn't like his manner. Whereas, Gaston loves his company and has built up a good relation with his collegemate, Gouvernail. Gaston doesn't want to hear anything negative about his friend. He neither likes inhospitality showed by his wife, nor he preferred her dislike for his friend. When they talk together, Mrs. Baroda tells her husband that he is very cunning and irritating person. Hearing this Gaston became furious and didn't agree with the statement of Mrs. Baroda.
Gaston is genuinly surprised with his wife's expression because she has shown very rude behaviour for the friend of her husband so far. Mr. Gaston is aware of the fact that she doesn't like his company and doesn't realize that his wife actually likes Mr. Gouvernail unconciously. When he comes to know that this time Mrs. Baroda has invited his friend to visit during summer vacation, he is stunned by it.
