GRANDMOTHER
- Ray young Bear
Ray Young Bear is an American-Indian poet. He belongs to the Mesquaki tribe. As the title of this poem "Grandmother" itself suggests that it is totally about the poet's beloved grandmother. He has composed this poem in the memory of his grandmother, who used to be loving, caring and source of inspiration. Through the lines of this poem, it can be easily assumed that the poet has been deeply attached with his grandmother. The poet has tried to show his life-style through this poem. In the first stanza, he says that he is so closed to his grandmother that he can easily recognize her even from a long distance. The grandmother used to wear purple scarf and she always used to carry a plastic shopping bag. This shows that unfortunately the poet has a very ordinary life-style that means not a luxurious life. In the second stanza, he further says that if he had to feel hands on his head, he would definitely feel that those are the hands of his grandmother. This line reveals that there is very strong relation between the poet and his grandmother. She used to bless him by moving her hands gently over his head. The further lines explain that grandmother used to work in a farm and therefore, her hands were having the smell of roots. They (the poet and his grandmother) had to work hard for the survival of their lives. The poet further says that if he heard a voice coming from a rock, he would be able to find that those are the words of his grandmother. He compares her words with the light which help him to remove away all the darkness from his life. Through these lines, we could confidently say that the grandmother was not just a grandmother but also an instructor, who taught him to lead a happy and successful life. The poet is missing his grandmother and her valuable lessons, which are still fresh in his mind. In this nostalgic poem, the poet has used four senses to make it more descriptive. For instance, "see, felt, smell, heard". To conclude, even after her death the poet feels that he is still leading his life with the help of her guidelines, and definitely she has been the source of all-inspirations.
